Tommy Dowd Foundation Awards Two Scholarships

The 2009 Tommy Dowd Memorial Foundation Dinner/Dance was recently held at the American Legion in Monroe. The food was provided by Birchwood Caterers of Monroe and approximately 100 people attended.

The Foundation was created in 2005 in memory of Monroe resident Tommy Dowd who perished in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. To date, more than $25,000 has been awarded to local Monroe-Woodbury students for scholarships and donations have been made to many local charities.

This year’s scholarship recipients were Stephanie Zbylut and Timothy Murray.

At this year’s dinner, the Foundation was very pleased to donate to the Paula Catalina Foundation and to the James Taravella Memorial Foundation.

In addition, Mike Niemann of Best Mechanical in Monroe was given the 2009 Sponsor of the Year Award for all his time, effort and donations to the Foundation.
